We are SunSmart

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year over 2,000 Australians die from skin cancer, and more than two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia – and it can be almost entirely prevented with good sun protection.

Since 1988

Established in 1988, SunSmart is one of the longest running – and most successful – skin cancer prevention programs in the world. We are proud that our work has resulted in melanoma rates declining or stabilising in all age groups under 60 in Victoria.

Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide
Jointly funded by Cancer Council Victoria and the Victorian Government, we are famous for our Slip! Slop! Slap! catch-cry, which has expanded to include Seek (shade) and Slide (on sunglasses). In recognition of our work, Cancer Council Victoria has been designated a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborative Centre for Ultraviolet Radiation since 2004.

Saving lives

We provide leadership and innovation in skin cancer prevention and early detection using a multi-faceted approach. Through long held partnerships, community programs, mass media campaigns and advocacy, we support Victorians to be SunSmart, reducing skin cancer rates and saving lives.

Our world-leading SunSmart program is dedicated to reducing skin cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality through a targeted prevention and early detection program.
